Project: The role of genetic and epigenetic alterations in atopic dermatitis

Description:
The Genomics Work Group of the Department of Dermatology and Allergy, Technische Universität München, is seeking applications from highly motivated candidates for a 3-year GSISH-funded PhD Studentship. The successful candidate will work on a project on the role of genetic and epigenetic alterations in atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is a biologically complex and heterogeneous allergic disease, and there is limited information known about recurrent genomic or epigenomic abnormalities in this disorder. The project will involve the use of high throughput technologies with a focus on methylation arrays. Molecular and cell biology techniques will be applied to functionally determine the role of genes of interest. The candidate will work on this cutting-edge project in an interdisciplinary team of physicians, molecular biologists and statisticians in cooperation with Helmholtz Zentrum Munich and the Institut of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology of the Technische Universität München (TUM). Experimental work will mainly be carried out at the Helmholtz Zentrum München (Genome Analysis Center).
Qualifications:
The applicant should possess a Master's degree or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics or Life Sciences, and intend to obtain a PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.) within the scheduled time of 3 years. Excellent writing and communication skills in English are required. The candidate is expected to have some laboratory experience. There should be an interest in molecular epidemiology and bioinformatics. Previous experiences in experimental research and basic knowledge in statistics and computer programming would be considered assets but are not requirements.

The GSISH will actively assist the candidate in achieving a Ph.D. degree within the scheduled time of three years.
