Project Details

Project:
Development of a backward detection optoacoustic imaging system for high resolution mesoscopic imaging

Supervisors:
Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos
Prof. Dr. Franz Pfeiffer

Start of PhD-work at GSISH:
November 2010

Project Description:
This PhD thesis is aiming at imaging tumor development starting at the early stage. Although tumor studies and tumor therapy have become more and more advanced, medical and pharmaceutical research institutions point at the lack of equally advanced methods for measuring the effects of drug developments, especially in-vivo. Optoacoustic imaging is currently the only method to provide high spatial resolution, deep-tissue penetration, non-ionization, non-invasiveness and cost-effectiveness at the same time and is therefore ideally suited for that task. Special emphasis is placed on tumor specific developments regarding hardware and the respective reconstruction techniques, comprising for example high-resolution micro-raster-scanning.
